CPD For Teachers

We’re committed to working with you to improve science teaching and learning in the classroom.

We have a series of CPD sessions taking place throughout the year at both at Aberdeen Science Centre and at various locations throughout Aberdeenshire. CPD sessions can also be booked to take place in your school.

Please note: all CPDs take place from 4.15-6pm on the dates listed in the science centre.

CPD COURSE TOPICS

EARLY YEARS

ALL ABOUT INSIDE ME

All About Inside Me investigates the science that goes on inside of us every day of our lives. In this CPD you will guided through several hands-on, affordable, CfE linked activities that you can try with your Early Years classes. These include looking at the function of our skeleton and organs, the senses, healthy living and detailing some misconceptions children may have about the body. It will also cover some of the loan kits we have available to help with these topics. HOW HOT ARE YOU?

How Hot are You explores the concepts of heat, insulation and the properties of materials. In this CPD you will take part in CfE linked, affordable, hands-on activities that you can carry out with your Early Years pupils to investigate these topics. This session will also provide you with the background knowledge, ensuring you leave feeling confident teaching these subjects. FACILITATING SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS

Aberdeen Science Centre’s Facilitating Science Investigations CPD aims to equip you with the tools, knowledge and confidence to carry out scientific investigations with your pupils in the classroom. This CPD covers the principles of fair testing and how you can carry our fair tests simply and effectively in the class room. It will also cover other types of science enquiry; observation, classifying, pattern seeking and research. Guided discussion will help you in areas of the CfE that you may be struggling to cover with practical activities. FUN WITH FORCES

This CPD will cover how to introduce basic forces and electricity to Early Years pupils. We aim to give participants the knowledge and confidence to teach your Early Years pupils about forces and electricity. Participants will have the chance to get hands-on with activities that are simple to set up with easily accessible materials. WEATHER AROUND US

Investigate the science of weather and discover how to create a weather station to record the weather with your pupils. Covering SCN 0-05a, 0-20a, SOC 0-12a

PLANET EARTH

Unearth what gives us day and night, the seasons plus explore ways to introduce animal and plant life to your pupils. Covering SCN 0-01a, 0-03a, 0-06a, 0-07a, 0-08a, 0-12a, 0-20a, SOC 0-08a.

Do you want to build a snowman? Discover how to stop your snowman from melting and rescue Anna and her friends from snow mountain in this interactive workshop on insulation and heat. Covering SCN 0-05a/1-05a, 0-12a, 0-15a

FIRST & SECOND LEVEL

FISH, FOSSILS & FUEL (ENERGY4YOU)

Energy4me will give you the knowledge and confidence to teach around the topic of oil and gas at first and second level. Participants will have the opportunity to try hands-on activities, linked to the CfE, which are simple to set up, but effective in facilitating pupils to carry out scientific experiments and investigations. All attendees will receive FREE RESOURCES to bring back to the classroom including: CfE linked lesson plans, posters, electronic copies of presentations, videos and pupil hand outs and a copy of the DK book “Oil and Natural Gas”, which complements all of the activities and lessons in the programme. KITCHEN CHEMISTRY

Investigate the use of everyday household items, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda in a variety of simple, yet effective, science experiment. Covering SCN 2-19a

THE WONDERS OF SPACE

LIFE UNDER THE SEA (SUBSEA CHANNEL UK)
