Come and join us at Aberdeen Science Centre for a free evening exploring the beauty of maths and how it can be used to improve performance.
About this event
Join us at Aberdeen Science Centre on Thursday 29th September 2022 at 6.30pm to explore the beauty of maths. We are delighted to have Bob Lyons visiting the centre to share his insight into data analysis and sport performance,
as well as Ben Martin, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Aberdeen, who will use examples from sociology, finance and medicine to demonstrate the beauty and power of maths. There will be time at the end for questions and answers.
Refreshments will be provided, and you will also have the opportunity to explore our 60+ exhibits and take part in different activities on our exhibition floor, investigating the real life applications of statistics.
Meet the speakers:
Bob Lyons has over 30 years experience of elite sport performance coaching and he will be delivering a talk on how he uses statistics and data analysis to improve the performance of his athletes. He will discuss how data is collected and presented to promote athletic improvement – this will hopefully involve an element of audience participation! Bob will also explore how this elite performance development can be used in everyday lives.
Ben Martin is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Aberdeen, having lived and carried out research across the world. Ben’s talk will use sociology, finance and medicine to demonstrate how maths can provide the tools for extracting information from even the largest and messiest datasets, illustrating the beauty and power of mathematics.
This event is recommended for those age 14+ and is supported by Maths Week Scotland.
