STEM Exchange – European Marine Energy Centre

STEM Exchange – European Marine Energy Centre

Join Aberdeen Science Centre on Thursday, 25th November 2021 at 1230pm as we explore renewable marine energy. The latest in our free STEM Exchange online talk series – An Introduction to the European Marine Energy Centre and Marine Energy Technologies’, will be given by Florence Ungaro, Marine Operation Specialist.

By 2030 the Scottish Government aims to generate 50% of Scotland’s overall energy consumption from renewable sources. Supporting the transition to a greener Scotland is the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), the only accredited test centre for marine renewable energy in the world.

EMEC was set up in 2003 in the Orkney Islands to provide a plug-and-play environment to test and further develop marine renewable energy technologies, particularly wave and tidal converters. The centre tests a number of wave and tidal energy devices simultaneously in some of the harshest weather conditions, while producing electricity to the national grid through the company’s infrastructure

We are delighted to have Florence Ungaro share an insight into EMEC’s test sites and provide an overview of wave and tidal energy; from how they work to why they are valuable energy sources and how their performance can be assessed. Florence will also cover the way in which devices are tested to harness wave and tidal power, outlining the practical aspects of deploying marine devices and connecting them to the national grid.

As part of the online session, there will be time at the end for questions and answers. This online talk to is free to attend and is open to anyone curious in finding out more.
