Family Fun in Fife with Shell and Aberdeen Science Centre

Vikings, Lego, archaeology and fitness workshops will be on offer at Shell’s Fife Family Fun Day next month, run in collaboration with Aberdeen Science Centre.

The day of free fun for the communities near Shell’s Fife Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) plant at Mossmorran will offer opportunities for all ages to learn something new and take part in hands-on scientific experiments, educational sessions and demonstrations.

The Fife Family Fun Day will run at the Fife Cycle Park in Lochgelly, from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, September 10, and has capacity for up to 1,000 visitors throughout the day. Free parking is available close by at Lochgelly High School.

A wide variety of activities will be available for all the family, including building and programming Lego robotics with Computer Xplorers, STEM throughout history lessons with Techfest and workout sessions from Scottish Sport Futures.

A host of other sessions will be running courtesy of Glasgow Science Centre, Dundee Science Centre, Archaeology Scotland, TL Tech, IChemE, Young STEM Leader Programme and STEM Ambassadors.

Several attractions will also be on offer, including face painting from Angela’s Squiggly Faces and the chance to meet Bjarni, a “real-life” Viking, who will showcase the science behind Viking raiders, including live sharp weapons demonstrations.

Shell Fife NGL plant manager Craig Burnett said: “Science plays an important role in meeting some of society’s most pressing challenges, including the need for more and cleaner energy. Having fun with science at an early age can encourage children to further their interest at secondary school and beyond, and we’re all for this. We also like to meet with our neighbours. Please come along and enjoy a fun day out”.

Bryan Snelling, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are excited to be working with our partner Shell to run the Fife Family Fun Day. From programming Lego robots and meeting our very own Viking to workout sessions and archaeological investigations, we hope to offer a range of activities that will truly have something for everyone. We are looking forward to once again working a host of other organisations who will be running many of the activities and stalls on offer, including Dundee Science Centre and Glasgow Science Centre.”

“We are looking forward to welcoming people of all ages on the day and we cannot wait to show everyone what we have in store.”
