FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY WITH SHELL UK LTD AND ABERDEEN SCIENCE CENTRE

Free family STEM day in Cowdenbeath

Aberdeen Science Centre is teaming up with Shell Fife NGL plant to take its unique brand of STEM education on the road for its Fife Family Fun Day.

Robots, magic and ancient artifacts can all be found at Fife’s Beath High School as part of the Shell UK Ltd-sponsored event.

Fife Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, 20 May from 10am-3pm at Beath High School, Cowdenbeath. Admission to the event is free, with no advanced booking required.

A wide variety of activities will be available across the day, including building and programming Lego robotics with Computer Xplorers, STEM throughout history lessons with Techfest and the chance to learn all about optical illusions from the former president of Edinburgh’s Magic Circle, Tricky Ricky.

A host of other sessions will be running courtesy of Archaeology Scotland, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), IChemE, TL Tech Smart Home Solutions, Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI), Glasgow and Dundee Science Centres.

Several attractions will also be on offer, including face painting from Angela’s Squiggly Faces and the chance to meet Bjarni, a “real-life” Viking, who will showcase the science behind Viking raiders, including live sharp weapons demonstrations.

This event will have fun for the whole family, with activities suitable for ages 3 and up. Free refreshments will be available for attendees throughout the day.

Shell UK Ltd, which operates the Fife NGL plant at Mossmorran, is committed to supporting STEM education and already sponsors the Shell Learning Zone at Aberdeen Science Centre, which reopened in 2020 after at £6million refurbishment.

Bryan Snelling, chief executive at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are very excited to partner up with Shell for our Fife Family Fun Day. From Lego robots to optical illusions, we will truly have something for every member of the family to enjoy.

“We are once again working alongside some fantastic organisations who will be running many of the activities and stalls on offer, including Dundee Science Centre and Doodle and Splat, who will ensure the event will be a day to remember.

“We are looking forward to welcoming people of all ages on the day and we cannot wait to show everyone what we have in store.”

Shell Fife NGL plant manager Craig Burnett said: “Science plays an important role in meeting some of society’s most pressing challenges, including the need for more and cleaner energy. Having fun with science at an early age can encourage children to further their interest at secondary school and beyond, and we’re all for this. We also like to meet with our neighbours. Please come along and enjoy a fun day out”

Attendees will be able to drop into the event at any time during the day, with parking available at the Beath High School car park. Attendees should use the entrance to the dining hall instead of the main school entrance.
