The Travellers’ Choice Award, which was previously known as the Certificate of Excellence, recognises places that earn consistently positive reviews by visitors, who rate services, quality and customer satisfaction.
The coveted achievement is the only travel industry award based on millions of reviews from travellers around the world and celebrates their favourite hotels, restaurants and airlines. Winners must have an overall rating of at least four out of five and a minimum number of reviews to qualify, with only around 10% of global businesses listed on Tripadvisor receiving a Travellers’ Choice Award.
This is the first award secured by Aberdeen Science Centre since it reopened last year, following a major £6million redevelopment project to create an aspirational science centre which reflects the STEM priorities for both industry and education.
More than 60 new interactive exhibits over two floors now await visitors, including The OPITO Theatre of Energy – the UK’s first immersive experience of its kind – and RoboThespian, a chatty humanoid robot sponsored by the centre’s Digital Futures Partner, Equinor.
Bryan Snelling, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are thrilled to have been
awarded the Travellers’ Choice award by Tripadvisor, especially as it is based solely on the feedback from our visitors, who have praised the huge range of interactive exhibits we offer, our engaging staff and fascinating science demonstrations.
“This fantastic endorsement comes despite a challenging first year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are pleased to be open seven days a week and are looking forward to welcoming school groups for the first time this year, as well as offering birthday parties and corporate events.
“We’re delighted our guests love the new-look science centre as much as we do!”
The centre’s exhibits are aimed at all ages and are themed into six zones: Energy; Space; Life Sciences; Make It, Test It; and a dedicated area for the under-6s, as well as the Shell Learning Zone, where science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are brought to life.
They support ASC’s commitment to inspire a lifelong interest in science, by creating engaging experiences which are fun, informative and educational.
Natural light floods into the building thanks to an exposed roof structure, creating an airy and modern interior, with flexible corporate meeting spaces and a café operated by Grub.
Kanika Soni, Chief Commercial Officer at Tripadvisor, said: “Congratulations to all the winners of the 2021 Travellers’ Choice Awards. I know the past year has been extremely challenging for tourism businesses. What has impressed me is how businesses adapted to these challenges, implementing new cleanliness measures, adding social distancing guidelines, and utilising technology to prioritise guest safety.
“The Travellers’ Choice Awards highlight the places that are consistently excellent – delivering quality experiences time and time again even while navigating changing customer expectations and new ways of working. Based on a full year of reviews from customers, this award speaks to the great service and experience you provided guests in the midst of a pandemic.”
