Fashion the Future Workshops

Fashion the Future Workshops

Join us this July and August for exclusive hands-on artist-led workshops exploring the science of fashion and design. All workshops are included in general admission.

The Fashion the Future project is supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland.

Flower Pounding and Block Printing with Natural Dye Pastes with Sophie Mancellon

(12th July)

In flower pounding participants are invited to explore the hidden colours inside plants through the playful, sensory technique of flower pounding. Using real petals and leaves, you’ll learn how natural pigments are released through pressure and transferred directly onto fabric, creating vibrant, one-of-a-kind prints

In Sophie’s second workshop, block printing with natural dye pastes, discover the rhythm, colour, and creativity of sustainable textile design in this block-printing workshop using natural dye pastes. Participants will explore how plant-based dyes can be thickened, mixed, and applied with simple wooden blocks to create bold motifs and repeating patterns.

This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities. Everyone leaves with a printed cotton square or mini tote — and a deeper understanding of how natural dyes can shape the future of fashion through low-impact, creative making.

Giving Food Scraps a New Life with Charlottle Banks from the_print_files

(16th July and 24th July)

Explore how to dye fabric using food scraps and waste materials to give old clothes a new life!

Survival Accessories for the Future with Aubin Stewart

(22nd July and 23rd July)

Imagine it is the year 2076. Something strange has happened. What problem do your jewellery pieces or accessories solve? Do they have a secret purpose? Come along to create unique accessories using unexpected materials.

Weaving Nature and Sustainability with Sophie Mancellon

(26th July)

Participants will explore the art of weaving through two different lenses, one grounded in nature, the other in sustainability.

In the first activity, participants will gather and weave with natural materials: leaves, grasses, wool, and herbs. The second activity shifts focus to recycled and found materials, inviting children to transform packaging, yarn scraps, and everyday objects into vibrant woven artworks.

Wild Pattern Lab with Laura O’Kane, Blómandi Studio

(29th July and 30th July)

Join artist and textile designer Laura O’Kane of Blómandi Studio, for a Wild Pattern Lab, a colourful, hands-on adventure into the wild world of patterns! Dive into nature’s secrets as you explore feathers, fur, scales, and camouflage, then let your imagination run wild as you create your own fantastical creature-inspired repeating pattern designs.

Material to Metaverse with Colin Bell and Joanna O’Brien

(31st July & 1st August)

This workshop explores fashion and textile design through collage, mixed media experimentation, and digital visualisation. Participants begin by creating a mood board to define a theme, then develop paper and textile collages to explore colour, texture, and concept generation. These ideas are subsequently translated into digital renderings and short films to visualise the textile functioning as a garment, costume, jammies, or accessory.

Workshops are filled on a first come first served basis.
